Chicago going back to Monday, October 16, 1871. Observations taken from
October 15, 1870 to October 8, 1871 were lost in the Great Chicago
Fire.
According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal
high is 79 and the normal low is 59. I've calculated the 33-year
averages at 80 and 57.
On the hot side, in 1983 the high was 95 (O'Hare's hottest high of the date) with a low of 68. Two
years later, in 1985, the high was 92 (O'Hare's co-second hottest high of the date) with a low of 71 (O'Hare's co-second warmest low of the date). 1983 and 1985 are O'Hare's co-warmest September 5ths. Another co-second hottest high of 92 degrees occurred in 1999.
The other co-warmest low of 71 degrees occurred in 1990. The record high of 98 was set way back in 1899. The record warmest low
of 77 occurred way back in 1912. Both records were set at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 23 of the past 33
highs (70%) were in the: 70s (10) and 80s (13). O'Hare recorded consecutive 70s & 80s highs as follows: seven from 1976 through 1982 and six from 2001 through 2006. Our most recent 80s
high is 87 degrees in 2005. Five highs (15%) were in the hot 90s. Five highs
(15%) were in the cool 60s. O'Hare's second warmest September 5th was in 1971 as the high was 88 with a low of 70. The third and final co-second hottest high of 92 degrees occurred in 1959. O'Hare's warmest low of the date is 72 degrees in 1969.
