Oct. 15, 1870) were lost during the Great Chicago Fire which began on the evening of Sun. Oct. 8, 1871.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 75 and the normal low is 52. The 29-year averages are 77 and 55.

On the warm side, two years ago the high was 89 degrees with a low of 67. In 1991 the high was 88 with a low of 66. In 1994 the high was 90 with a low of 64. In 1987 the high was 85 with a low of 68. Last year the high was 87 with a low of 66. In 1980 the high was 86 with a low of 66. Other warm highs include 91 in 1988, 87 in 1998, 85 in 1989 and 84 in 1999. The record high of 93 was set in 1942 and tied in 1953. The record warmest low of 72 was set in 1921. 13 of the past 29 highs have been in the and 80s.

On the cool side, 1983 saw the only 50s high of 55 with a low of 45. The high in 1996 was 65 with a low of 36. In 1990 the high was 65 with a low of 42. The other cool high was 65 in 1981. The low was 39 degrees in 1984 ('84 and '96 had the only lows in the 30s). The record coolest high was set way back in 1889 at 42 degrees. The record low of 35 was set way, way back in 1873. 20 of the 29 lows so far have been in the 40s (9), 60s (11).

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 4:47 and sunrise is at 5:20. Sunset is at 20:22 and twilight ends at 20:56. There's a total of 15 hours, 2 minutes of sunlight and 16 hours, 9 minutes between twilights. The moon is waning crescent with 28% visible at midnight and 23% visible at noon. Moonrise was at 2:18 and moonset is at 15:39. Moonrise is at 2:43 tomorrow. Moonlight time is 13 hours, 21 minutes today. The moon reached the last quarter last Tuesday at 21:57.

The record coolest high was set way back in 1889 at 46 degrees. 26 of the 29 lows so far have been in the 40s (11), 50s (7) and 60s (8).

On the warm side, two years ago the high was 75 with the only 60s low of 64. In 1989 the high was 76 with a low of 58. In 1991 the high was 77 with a low of 55. In 1994 the high was 75 with a low of 57. What's interesting about the highs today is that all of the 80s highs of the last 29 years happened between 1980 to 1985. It was 82 in 1980, 80 in 1981 and 84 in 1985. The high in 1986 was 73 and in 2000 it was 76. Other warmer lows include 56 in 1984 and last year; 53 in 1990. 26 of the 29 highs have been in the 50s (7), 60s (10) and 70s (9). The record high of 94 was set in 1911 and the record warmest low of 72 was set in 1914. 1979 was the most tragic day in O'Hare's history. 273 people lost their lives when an American Airlines DC-10-10 crashed shortly after taking off. The engine which was attached to the left wing separated and fell onto the runway as the aircraft was gaining speed for takeoff. The aircraft landed adjacent to a mobile home park. It was a miracle that loss of life on the ground was not extensive. This year is the 29th anniversary of the crash.

On the cool side, the high in 1992 was 51 with the record low of 32. The high in 1988 was 59 with a low of 37. In 1983 the high was 59 with a low of 38. In 2002, the high was 57 with a low of 41. In 1997, the high was 54 with a low of 45. In 1996, the high was 56 with a low of 45. In 2001, the high was 59 with a low of 43. The low in 1979 was 43 and 44 in 1999. The record coolest high of 44 was set way back in 1893. 25 of the 29 lows have been in the 40s (12) and 50s (13).

The other two were 84 in 1992 and 82 in 1987. The upper 70s highs were 79 in 1996, a high of 78 three times (1979, 1994 and 1999) and 77 in 2001. None of the 50s lows were in the upper 50s. 24 of the 29 highs have been in the 60s (9) and 70s (15). The year 1977 holds both records on the warm side: the record high of 95 and record warmest low of 70.

On the warm side, in 1979 we had our only 90s high at 90 degrees and it is also the runner-up earliest first 90s high (earliest was on April 22 one year later in 1980). The low was the record warmest low of 68 degrees. In 1988, the high was 85 with a low of 52. Last year the high was 82 with a low of 54. The record high of 91 was set in 1963. Other 80s highs include 84 in 2004 and 85 in 2005. 24/29 highs have been in the 60s, 70s and 80s (9, 8 and 7 respectively).

On the cool side, in 1983 we had our only 40s high of 48 with the record low of 29. In 1984 the high was 51 with a low of 38. The record coolest high of 42 was set in 1960. The low was 32 in 1981. By far the largest category of low temperatures is the 40s at 17 occurrences of the 29 since 1979.

On the cool side, 1992 had the only mean that was at least 12 degrees or more below normal. We had our coolest high of 52 and the record low of 32. On the warm side, in 2001 we had our lone 80s high at 81 degrees and the record warmest low (and lone 60s low) of 65 degrees. In 1992 the high was 76 with a low of 50. The mid 70s highs were 76 in 1982, 75 in 1980, 75 in 1988, 73 in 1979 and 73 in 1999. The other 50s lows were 52 in 1993, 52 in 2006 and 51 in 1998. The record high of 91 was set in 1959. There were no highs in the upper 70s.

On the cold side, we had our only sub-50 degree high for the date at 44 degrees in 2005 with a low of 35. In 2004 we had a high of 51 and the only lower 30s low of 32. The only other 50s high was 50 in 1989. The record coldest high of 37 was set in 1940 and the record low of 27 was set way back in 1875.
