Other warmer lows include 56 in 1984 and last year; 53 in 1990. 26 of the 29 highs have been in the 50s (7), 60s (10) and 70s (9). The record high of 94 was set in 1911 and the record warmest low of 72 was set in 1914. 1979 was the most tragic day in O'Hare's history. 273 people lost their lives when an American Airlines DC-10-10 crashed shortly after taking off. The engine which was attached to the left wing separated and fell onto the runway as the aircraft was gaining speed for takeoff. The aircraft landed adjacent to a mobile home park. It was a miracle that loss of life on the ground was not extensive. This year is the 29th anniversary of the crash.

On the cool side, the high in 1992 was 51 with the record low of 32. The high in 1988 was 59 with a low of 37. In 1983 the high was 59 with a low of 38. In 2002, the high was 57 with a low of 41. In 1997, the high was 54 with a low of 45. In 1996, the high was 56 with a low of 45. In 2001, the high was 59 with a low of 43. The low in 1979 was 43 and 44 in 1999. The low was the record warmest low of 68 degrees. In 1988, the high was 85 with a low of 52. Last year the high was 82 with a low of 54. The record high of 91 was set in 1963. Other 80s highs include 84 in 2004 and 85 in 2005. 24/29 highs have been in the 60s, 70s and 80s (9, 8 and 7 respectively).
