Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. ORD has been the official site of record for Chicago since Thursday, January 17, 1980.


According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 82 and the normal low is 61. I've calculated the 32-year averages at 80 and 59.


On the hot side, in 1996 the high was 94 with a low of 73.
In 2005 the high was 91 with a low of 72. Our most recent 90s high and 70s low occurred in 2005. The other 90s highs were 93 in 2002 and 91 in 1990. The record high of 99 was tied in 1953, after first being set in 1913. The record warmest low of 80 occurred back in 1931. 25 of the past 32 highs (78%) were in the: 70s (10) and 80s (15). Four highs were in the hot 90s and two were in the cool 60s.

In looking back through the years to the first June at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1970 the high was 93 with a warm low of 78, a hot day. In 1968 the low was a warm 73 degrees. In 1966 the high was 90 with a low of 60, a 30 degree spread. In 1965 the high was 68 with a low of 44, a cool day. In 1963 the high was 92 with a low of 62, a 30 degree spread.

More recently, there was a small spread of seven degrees two years ago, in 2009 (66/59). The large spreads were:
34 degrees in 1989 (83/49), 32 degrees in 2006 (85/53) and 30 degrees in 1979 (81/51).

On the cool side, in 1982 the high was 70 with a low of 47. Four years later, in 1986, the high was 64 with a low of 59, a small five degree spread. The other 40s low was 49 in 1989. The other cool highs were 66 two years ago in 2009 and 69 in 1993. The record low of 45 was set in 1943. The record coolest high of 59 occurred way back in 1902. 28 of the last 32 lows (88%) were in the: 50s (18) and 60s (10). Two lows were in the cold 40s and two were in the warm 70s. Although there have been ten 60s lows, our most recent one was 62 in 2004. Lows over the last five years were in the 50s. Just before that, in 2005, the low was 72. The forecast low for today by the National Weather Service/Chicago is "around 60."

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 4:46 and sunrise is at 5:20. Sunset is at 20:34 and twilight ends at 21:08. There's a total of 15 hours, 14 minutes of daylight today and 16 hours, 22 minutes between twilights. We lost no minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 4:46 and sunrise is at 5:21. The moon is waning crescent and will reach new tomorrow morning at 3:54. A decade before, in 1981, the high was 96 with a low of 70. In 1996 the high was 92 with a low of 73. The only other 90s high was 90 in 2005. The only other 70s low was 73 in 2005. The record high of 97 was set in 1954. The record warmest low of 80 occurred in 1931. 27 of the past 32 highs (84%) were in the: 70s (14) and 80s (13). Four highs were in the hot 90s. One high was in the cool 60s. The lone 60s high was 68. It occurred on one of the two coolest days of the past 32 years in 1984.

In looking back through the years to the first June at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1971 the high was 95 with a low of 73, a hot day. In 1966 the high was 89 with a low of 57, a 32 degree spread.

More recently, there was a large spread of
34 degrees in 1992 (88/54).

On the cool side, in 1989 the high was 73 with the record low (and only 40s low) of 48. Five years before, in 1984, the high was 68 with a low of 53. The other cool highs were 70 in 1982, 70 in 1988 and 70 in 2007. The record coolest high of 59 was set way back in 1902. 27 of the last 32 lows (84%) were in the: 50s (13) and 60s (14). One low was in the cold 40s. Four lows were in the warm 70s.

Moonset is at 19:16 tonight. Moonrise is at 4:35 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 15 hours, 37 minutes which is 8 minutes longer than yesterday. Moonlight time is at it's peak for the next several days, just when we can't see it!

The only other 90s high of the past 32 years was 92 in 1996. The record high of 101 was originally set in 1952 and tied in 1971. The record warmest low of 81 occurred back in 1913. 21 of the past 32 highs (66%) were in the 80s. Two highs (6%) were in the hot 90s. Nine highs (28%) were in the cool: 60s (1) and 70s (8). The lone 60s high was 69. It occurred on the coolest day of the past 32 years in 2000.

In looking back through the years to the first June at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1973 the high was a cool 70 degrees. In 1971 the high was 97 with a low of 75, a hot day and year of the record high (101 at Midway). In 1964 the high was 91 with a low of 61, a 30 degree spread. In 1962 the high was 90 with a low of 57, a 33 degree spread. In 1959 the high was 88 with a warm low of 78, a hot day.

More recently, there was a small spread of seven degrees in 1983 (70/63). The other spreads were large:
30 degrees in 1996 (92/62) and 30 degrees in 1988 (88/58).

On the cool side, in 2000 the high was 69 (our only 60s high) with a low of 55. In 1992 the high was 82 with the record low of 44 (our only 40s low), a spread of 38 degrees. The other cool high was 70 in 1983. The record coolest high of 58 occurred way back in 1902. 20 of the last 32 lows (63%) were in the 60s. Ten lows (31%) were in the cool: 40s (1) and 50s (9). Two lows (6%) were in the warm 70s.

On the hot side, in 1998 the high was 95 with a low of 69. In 2005 the high was 95 with a low of 68. In 2007 the high was 91 (our most recent 90s high) with a low of 71.
The only other 90s high of the past 32 years was 93 in 1991. The other 70s lows were 70 in 1999 and 72 last year (in 2010). The record high of 101 was set in 1971. The record warmest low of 79 occurred back in 1931. 22 of the past 32 highs (69%) were in the 80s. Four highs (12%) were in the hot 90s. Six highs (19%) were in the cool: 60s (1) and 70s (5). Our most recent 70s high was 77 in 2000. The lone 60s high was 69. It occurred on the coolest day of the past 32 years in 1992. It didn't rain that day, but winds were Northeast, off the lake. The prior year, 1991, saw one of our hottest highs, 93 degrees.

In looking back through the years to the first June at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1971 the high was a hot 96 with a low of 69, a hot day. 1971 was the year of the record high of 101 at Midway. In 1968 the high was a cool 58 with a low of 55, a three degree spread and cool day. In 1959 the high was 91 with a warm low of 75, a hot day.

The June 1964 heat wave was impressive. The following were the highs and lows: 26th (90/65), 27th (90/61), 28th (91/61), 29th (91/62) and 30th (90/61).

More recently, the spreads were all large:
32 degrees in 1981 (81/49) and 30 degrees in 1996 (89/59).

On the cool side, in 1992 the high was our only 60s high of 69 with the record low of 47. In 1988 the high was 78 with a low of 51. In the prior year, 1987, the high was 75 with a low of 54. Two years ago, in 2009, the high was 94 with a low of 75. In 1998 the high was 95 with a low of 70. Another hot high was 94 in 1983. The other 90s highs were 92 in 2003, 91 in 1989 and 91 in 2005. Other warm lows were 73 in 2002 and 72 in 2003. The record warmest low of 76 occurred way back in 1890.
19 of the past 32 highs (59%) were in the 80s. Seven highs (22%) were in the warm: 90s (6) and 100s (1). Six highs (19%) were in the cool 70s.
