August 31: ORD

Today is August 31st. It's the 244th day of the year. 122 days remain. It's week 35 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. ORD has been the official site of record for Chicago since Thursday, January 17, 1980. Before this, the official site of record was on the south side of Chicago at Midway International Airport (MDW), beginning on Wednesday, July 1, 1942. From Friday, January 1, 1926 through Tuesday, June 30, 1942, the official site was at the University of Chicago. Before that, the official site was at various locations in Chicago going back to Monday, October 16, 1871. Observations taken from October 15, 1870 to October 8, 1871 were lost in the Great Chicago Fire.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 80 and the normal low is 61. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 80 and 60.

On the hot side, two years ago, in 2010 (O'Hare's warmest August 31st), the high was 93 (along with a high of 93 in 1960, O'Hare's hottest high of the date) with a low of 75 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date). A decade before, in 2000 (tied with 1969 as O'Hare's fourth warmest August 31st), the high was 92 (along with a high of 92 in 1961, O'Hare's second hottest high of the date) with a low of 68. The record high of 99 was set in 1953 at Midway. The record warmest low of 76 occurred in 1941 at the University of Chicago. 29 of
the past 33 highs (88%) were in the: 70s (13) and 80s (16). Three highs were in the hot 90s. One high was in the cool 60s (a high of 68 three years ago in 2009). There was a long string of 70s & 80s highs, 22 years from 1978 through 1999. The following refers to August 31st at O'Hare. The second warmest day was in 1960 (high of 93 (with 2010, the hottest high of the date) and low of 70). Tied for third warmest are the years 1973 (high of 89, low of 73 (second warmest low of the date)) and 1977 (high of 90, low of 72). Tied for fourth warmest with 2000 is the year 1969 (high of 88, low of 72).

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable:
In 1975 the high was 72 with a low of 65, a seven degree spread. In 1973 low was a warm 73 degrees. In 1967 the high was 67 with a low of 47, a cool day. That low of 47 is equal to the record low. In 1965 the high was a cool 68 degrees. In 1964 the low was a cold 49 degrees. In 1961 the high was a hot 92 with a low of 62, a 30 degree spread. In 1960 the high was a hot 93 with a low of 70, a hot day.

More recently, there w
ere large spreads of 31 degrees in 1984 (82/51) and 30 degrees in 2008 (90/60).

On the cool side, three years ago, in 2009 (O'Hare's second coolest August 31st), the high was 68 (along with 1965, O'Hare's second coolest high of the date) with a low of 49 (along with 1964, O'Hare's second coldest low of the date). In 1994 the high was 71 with a low of 52. In 1987 the high was 72 with a low of 52. The record low of 47 was set way back in 1872. The record coolest high of 62 occurred way back in 1892. Both records were set at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 30 of the last 33 lows (91%) were in the: 50s (14) and 60s (16). One low was in the cold 40s. Two were in the warm 70s. There was a string of 28 straight years of 50s & 60s lows from 1981 through 2008. O'Hare's coolest August 31st was in 1967 as the high was 67 (O'Hare's coolest high of the date) with a low of 47 (O'Hare's coldest low of the date and tied with the record low). O'Hare had a cold low of 49 degrees in 1964 (tied with 2009 as O'Hare's second coldest of the date). In 1965 the high was 68 degrees (tied with 2009 as O'Hare's second coolest high of the date).

There was an instance of back-to-back years in which temperatures were just about as opposite as they can be. In 2009 the high was 68 with a low of 49, overall 11.5 degrees BELOW normal. Then in 2010 the high was 93 with a low of 75, overall 14 degrees ABOVE normal.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:49 and sunrise is at 6:18. Sunset is at 19:28 and twilight ends at 19:57. There's a total of 13 hours, 10 minutes of daylight today and 14 hours, 8 minutes between twilights. We lost three minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:50 and sunrise is at 6:19. The moon reaches the full Corn (a.k.a. Green Corn or Grain) moon at 8:58. Since this is the second full moon of the month, it's also Blue moon. Illumination was 100% at midnight, will be 100% at noon and 99% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 6:25 this morning. Moonrise is at 19:12 tonight. Moonset is at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 11 hours, 13 minutes which is 37 minutes longer than yesterday.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in three days.

August 30: ORD

Today is August 30th. It's the 243rd day of the year. 123 days remain.

I've calculated the 33-year averages at 80 and 61.

On the hot side, in 1995 (O'Hare's warmest August 30th) the high was 92 (O'Hare's co-hottest high) with a low of 74. Two years ago, in 2010 (O'Hare's second warmest August 30th), the high was 88 with a low of 74. Since our only other 90s high of 90 degrees occurred in 1993, the 90s highs occurred within two years of each other! Those lows of 74 degrees are O'Hare's warmest of the date. The record high of 96 degrees was last set in 1953 at Midway after originally being set back in 1925 adjacent to Lake Michigan. The record warmest low of 76 degrees occurred in 1932 at the University of Chicago, having originally been set way back in 1881
adjacent to Lake Michigan. 28 of the past 33 highs (85%) were in the: 70s (12) and 80s (16). Two highs were in the hot 90s. Three highs were in the cool 60s. There were two long streaks of highs in the 70s & 80s. The first was 22 years from 1971 through 1992 and then nine years from 2000 through 2008. O'Hare's third warmest August 30th was in 1969 as the high was 90 with a low of 71. The other co-hottest high of 92 degrees occurred in 1962. O'Hare's 91 degree highs occurred in 1961 and 1970.

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: in 1976 the high was 79 with a low of 49, a 30 degree spread.
In 1967 the high was a cool 67 degrees. In 1965 the high was a cool 64 degrees. In 1962 the high was a hot 92 with a low of 62, a 30 degree spread. In 1959 the temperatures for yesterday (the 29th) and today (the 30th) were the same: a high of 86 with a low of 69.
More recently, there w
as a large spread of 31 degrees in 2008 (87/51) and a small spread of six degrees in 1994 (67/61).

On the cool side, three years ago, in 2009 (O'Hare's coolest August 30th), the high was 66 with a low of 51. In 1999 the high was 69 with a low of 55. The only other post-1978 60s high was 67 degrees in 1994. In 1986 the high was 76 with a low of 48 (O'Hare's coldest low of the date). The other 40s lows were 49 degrees in 1976 and 1988 (O'Hare's second coldest lows of the date). So post-1978, the 40s lows occurred within two years of each other! The record low of 47 degrees was last set in 1946 at Midway after originally being set back in 1915 adjacent to Lake Michigan. The record coolest high of 58 degrees occurred back in 1915, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 25 of the last 33 lows (76%) were in the: 50s (13) and 60s (12). Two lows (6%) were in the cold 40s. Six lows (18%) were in the warm 70s. For nine straight years, from 2001 through 2009, lows were in the 50s & 60s. O'Hare's second coolest August 30th was in 1965 as the high was 64 (O'Hare's coolest high of the date) with a low of 54.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:48 and sunrise is at 6:17. Sunset is at 19:30 and twilight ends at 19:59. There's a total of 13 hours, 13 minutes of daylight today and 14 hours, 11 minutes between twilights. We lost two minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:49 and sunrise is at 6:18. The moon is waxing gibbous and will be full tomorrow as the Corn (a.k.a. Green Corn or Grain) moon at 8:58. Since this is also the second full moon of the month, it's also Blue moon. Illumination was 98% at midnight, will be 99% at noon and 100% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 5:19 this morning. Moonrise is at 18:43 tonight. Moonset is at 6:25 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 10 hours, 36 minutes which is 37 minutes longer than yesterday.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in four days.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 80 and the normal low is 61. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 81 and 61.

On the hot side, the following four days are tied as O'Hare's warmest August 29ths:
1973 (high of 92 with a low of 73), 1984 (high of 94 with a low of 71), 1991 (high of 92 with a low of 73), and two years ago, in 2010 (high of 94 with a low of 71). The other warm highs were 94 degrees in 1983, 92 degrees in 1962 and 92 degrees in 1980. The highs of 94 degrees are O'Hare's hottest of the date. The other warm low of 73 degrees occurred in 1995. The lows of 73 degrees are O'Hare's warmest lows of the date. The record high of 98 was set in 1953. The record warmest low of 74 was set in 1973. Both records were set at Midway. 26 of the past 33 highs (79%) were in the: 70s (11) and 80s (15). O'Hare recorded 12 consecutive years of highs in the 70s and 80s from 1992 through 2003. Five highs (15%) were in the hot 90s. Two highs (6%) were in the cool 60s (69 degrees three years ago (in 2009) and 69 degrees in 2004.

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1973 the high was 92 with a low of 73, a hot day. 1973 was the year of the record warmest low.
In 1971 the high was 84 with a low of 53, a 31 degree spread. In 1965 the high was 66 with a low of 41, a cool day. That low of 41 was colder than the record low. In 1964 the high was 83 with a low of 52, a 31 degree spread. In 1962 the high was a hot 92 with a low of 59, a 33 degree spread. In 1959 the temperatures for today (the 29th) and tomorrow (the 30th) were the same: a high of 86 with a low of 69.

More recently, there w
as a large spread of 30 degrees in 1983 (high of 94, low of 64).

On the cool side, in 1982 the high was 72 with the co-record low of 43. That record low of 43 degrees was first set in 1965 at Midway. In 1986 the high was 71 with a low of 44. 1982 and 1986 are O'Hare's co-second coolest August 29ths. The other cold low was 48 degrees in 1988. As you can see, those 40s lows occurred quite some time ago in the 1980s, from 1982 through 1988. The record coolest high of 62 degrees occurred way back in 1893, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 25 of the last 33 lows (76%) were in the: 50s (10) and 60s (15). O'Hare recorded nine consecutive 50s and 60s lows from 2001 through 2009. Three lows (9%) were in the cold 40s. Five lows (15%) were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's coolest August 29th was in 1965 as the high was 66 (O'Hare's coolest high of the date) with a low of 41 (a low colder than the record low and O'Hare's coldest low of the date).

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:47 and sunrise is at 6:16. Sunset is at 19:31 and twilight ends at 20:00. There's a total of 13 hours, 15 minutes of daylight today and 14 hours, 13 minutes between twilights. We lost three minutes of daylight from yesterday. August 27: ORD

Today is August 27th. It's the 239th day of the year. 126 days remain.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 81 and the normal low is 62. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 81 and 63.

On the hot side, in 1990 the high was 93 (O'Hare's co-third hottest high of the date) with a low of 72. Three years later, in 1993, the high was 94 (
O'Hare's second hottest high of the date and our most recent 90s high) with a low of 70. The record high of 97 and record warmest low of 77 were set on the same hot day in 1973 at Midway. The record high of 97 was originally set in 1948 and tied five years later (and two decades before the latest incarnation) in 1953. 17 of the past 33 highs (52%) were in the 80s. Five highs (15%) were in the hot 90s. 11 highs (33%) were in the cool: 60s (5) and 70s (6). O'Hare's warmest August 27th days occurred in: 1973 (high of 95 (O'Hare's co-hottest high of the date) and low of 75 (O'Hare's second warmest low of the date)) and 1977 (high of 92 and low of 78 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date)). O'Hare's second warmest 8/27 was in 1976 as the high was 95 (O'Hare's other co-hottest high of the date) with a low of 74 (O'Hare's third warmest low of the date). O'Hare's other co-third hottest high of the date is 93 degrees in 1961.

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: in 1977 the high was 92 with a warm low of 78, a hot day. In 1976 the high was 95 with a low of 74, a hot day. In 1973 the high was 95 with a low of 75, a hot day. 1973 was the year that the records were set at Midway Airport. In 19
68 the high was 67 with a low of 50, a cool day. In 1967 the high was a cool 64 with a low of 55, a cool day. In 1964 the high was 85 with a low of 55, a 30 degree spread. In 1962 the high was 88 with a low of 51, a 37 degree spread. In 1961 the high was a hot 93 degrees.

More recently, there were
small spreads of five degrees in 1987 (66/61) and six degrees three years ago, in 2009 (67/61).

On the cool side, in 1986 (O'Hare's coolest August 27th) the high was 67 with a low of 48 (O'Hare's second coldest low of the date). In 1992 the high was 63 (O'Hare's coolest high of the date) with a low of 55. A decade earlier, in 1982, the high was 71 with the record low of 47. The other cool highs were 66 in 1987, 67 three years ago (in 2009) and 69 in 1988. The record coolest high of 61 occurred way back in 1915, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 23 of the last 33 lows (70%) were in the 60s. O'Hare recorded 12 consecutive 60s lows from 1994 through 2005. Five lows (15%) were in the cool: 40s (2) and 50s (3). As you can see, the two 40s lows occurred quite some time ago. Five lows (15%) were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's second coolest August 27th occurred in 1968 as the high was 67 with a low of 50. O'Hare's second coolest high of 64 degrees occurred in 1967.

August 26: ORD

Today is August 26th. It's the 239th day of the year. 127 days remain.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 81 and the normal low is 62. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 82 and 63.

On the hot side, in 1993 (O'Hare's co-warmest August 26th) the high was 94 with a low of 74 (O'Hare's co-second warmest low of the date). A decade later, in 2003, the high was 92 (our most recent 90s high) with a low of 71. In 1980 the high was 92 with a low of 69. In 1995 the high was 91 with a low of 69. The high of  93 degrees in 1991 is O'Hare's co-second hottest high of the date. The record high of 97 and record warmest low of 77 were set on the same hot day in 1973 at Midway.
The record high of 97 was originally set two decades earlier in 1953. 27 of the past 33 highs (82%) were in the: 70s (10) and 80s (17). Five highs were in the hot 90s. One high was in the cool 60s (65 in 1987). O'Hare's co-warmest August 26th was in 1973 as the high was 93 (O'Hare's other co-second hottest high) with a low of 75 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date). O'Hare's second warmest August 26th was in 1959 as the high was 92 with a low of 74 (O'Hare's other co-second warmest low of the date).

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1973 the high was 93 with a low of 75, a hot day. This was the year that the records were set at Midway Airport. In 1971 the high was a cool 68 degrees. In 19
68 the high was a cool 65 with a low of 54, a cool day. In 1964 the high was 74 with a cold low of 41, a 33 degree spread and cool day. That low of 41 was colder than the record low. In 1963 the low was a cool 50 degrees. In 1959 the high was 92 with a warm low of 74, a hot day.

More recently, there w
ere no small spreads of up to seven degrees or large spreads of at least 30 degrees.

On the cool side, in 1987 the high was 65 (O'Hare's co-coolest high of the date) with a low of 57. In the following year of 1988, the high was 77 with a low of 54. In 1992 the high was 72 with a low of 60. The record low of 47 was set way back in 1887. The record coolest high of 61 occurred way back in 1885. Both records were set at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 21 of the last 33 lows (64%) were in the 60s. O'Hare recorded six consecutive 60s lows from 2004 through 2009. Nine lows (27%) were in the cold 50s. Three lows (9%) were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's coolest August 26th was in 1964 as the high was 74 with a low of 41 (O'Hare's coldest low of the date, a low six degrees colder than the record low). O'Hare's second coolest August 26th was in 1968 as the high was 65 (O'Hare's other co-coolest high of the date) with a low of 54. O'Hare's second coldest low of 50 degrees occurred in 1963. O'Hare's second coolest high if the date is 68 degrees in 1971.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:44 and sunrise is at 6:13. Sunset is at 19:36 and twilight ends at 20:05. There's a total of 13 hours, 23 minutes of daylight today and 14 hours, 21 minutes between twilights. We lost three minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:45 and sunrise is at 6:14. The moon is waxing gibbous, having reached first quarter two days ago at 8:54. Illumination was 69% at midnight, will be 74% at noon and 79% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 0:50 this morning. Moonrise is at 16:10 this afternoon. Moonset is at 1:54 tomorrow morning.  Moonlight time is 8 hours, 40 minutes which is five minutes shorter than yesterday. Moonlight time is at its shortest today.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in eight days.

August 25: ORD

Today is August 25th. It's the 238th day of the year. 128 days remain. It's week 34 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. ORD has been the official site of record for Chicago since Thursday, January 17, 1980. According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 81 and the normal low is 62. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 82 and 63.

On the hot side, in 2003 (O'Hare's second warmest August 25th) the high was the co-record high of 95 with a low of 71. In 1995 the high was 90 with a low of 73 (O'Hare's co-warmest low of the date). The other co-record high of 95 occurred four years earlier in 1991 with a low of 66. The record highs of 95 were originally set at Midway in 1953 and 1959. The record warmest low of 74 occurred in 1959 at Midway.
Since 1959 has both a co-record high and record warmest low, it is the hottest August 25th. 28 of the past 33 highs (85%) were in the: 70s (10) and 80s (18). Four highs were in the hot 90s. One high (62 in 1987) was in the cool 60s. O'Hare's warmest August 25th was in 1959 as the high was 94 with a low of 73 (O'Hare's other co-warmest low of the date).

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1977 the high was 79 with a cold low of 48, a 31 degree spread. That low of 48 was just above the record low. 19
69 was the start of four consecutive days of highs of 86 degrees (from the 25th to the 28th). In 1967 the high was 82 with a cold low of 50, a 32 degree spread. In 1964 the high was 74 with a cold low of 47 (equal to the record low). In 1960 today and tomorrow (the 25th & 26th), we had lots of sixes, sevens and eights. On the 25th, it was 86 and 68. On the 26th, it was 88 and 66. In both cases, the means were 77 degrees! In 1959 the high was a hot 94 with a low of 73, a hot day. 1959 is the year of one of the co-record highs and is the year of the record warmest low.

More recently, there was an additional
small spread of seven degrees in 1999 (high of 73, low of 66).

On the cool side, in 1987 (O'Hare's coolest August 25th) the high was the record coolest high of 62 with a low of 56. The former record coolest high of 63 occurred in 1965. In 1985 the high was 73 with a low of 56. Three years earlier, in 1982, the high was 75 with a low of 54. In 1997 the high was 72 with a low of 58. Ten lows (30%) were in the cold 50s. Three lows (9%) were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's second coolest August 25th was in 1964 as the high was 74 with a low of 47 (O'Hare's coldest low of the date). This low of 47 is tied with the record low. O'Hare's second coldest low is 48 degrees in 1977. Another cold low is 50 degrees in 1967.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:42 and sunrise is at 6:12. Sunset is at 19:38 and twilight ends at 20:07. There's a total of 13 hours, 26 minutes of daylight today and 14 hours, 25 minutes between twilights. We lost three minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:44 and sunrise is at 6:13. The moon is waxing gibbous, having reached first quarter yesterday at 8:54. Illumination was 58% at midnight, will be 63% at noon and 69% at midnight tonight. Moonrise is at 15:15 this afternoon. Moonset is at 0:50 tomorrow morning. Moonrise is at 16:10 tomorrow afternoon. Moonlight time is 8 hours, 45 minutes which is 53 minutes shorter than yesterday. Moonlight time is nearly at its shortest today.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in nine days.

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1975 the high was 91 with a warm low of 79, a hot day and year of the record warmest low. That low of 79 is warmer than the record warmest low of 78 and is our most recent 70s low. In 19
71 the high was 90 with a low of 59, a 31 degree spread. In 1969 the high was 87 with a low of 57, a 30 degree spread. In 1967 the low was a cold 48 degrees, equal to the record low. August 23: ORD

Today is August 23rd. It's the 236th day of the year. 130 days remain. It's week 34 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. ORD has been the official site of record for Chicago since Thursday, January 17, 1980.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 81 and the normal low is 62. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 80 and 62.

On the hot side, in 1998 the high was 90 with a low of 71.
Five years earlier, in 1993, the high was 91 with a low of 69. The record high of 97 was set in 1947 at Midway. The record warmest low of 76 occurred in 1968 at Midway. 31 of the past 33 highs (94%) were in the: 70s (15) and 80s (16). Two highs were in the hot 90s. O'Hare's warmest August 23rd was in 1968 as the high was 95 (O'Hare's hottest high of the date) with a low of 77 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date). O'Hare's second warmest 8/23 was in 1975 (high of 92 and low of 74 (O'Hare's second warmest low of the date)). O'Hare's third warmest 8/23 was in 1959 (high of 91 and low of 73 (O'Hare's third warmest low of the date)). Another very warm day was in 1962 as the high was 94 (O'Hare's second hottest high of the date) and low of 67.

In looking back through the years to the first August at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1975 the low was a warm 74 degrees. In 19
73 the high was a cool 67 with a low of 63, a four degree spread. In 1972 the high was 75 with a low of 71, a four degree spread. In 1969 the high was 86 with a low of 53, a 33 degree spread. In 1968 the high was 95 with a low of 77, a hot day and year of the record warmest low. In 1965 the high was 73 with a cold low of 47 (colder than the record low) and a cool day. In 1964 the high was a cool 68 with a low of 52, a cool day. In 1962 the high was a hot 94 degrees. In 1961 the high was a cool 68 degrees.

More recently, there w
as a small spread of five degrees in 2001 (high of 74, low of 69).

On the cool side, in 1987 the high was 73 with a low of 54. Three years earlier, in 1984, the high was 74 with a low of 55. The record low is somewhat in dispute. The National Weather Service/Chicago (website) says that it's 51 degrees, set way back in 1888. However, in the daily summary for O'Hare, it says 48 degrees set way back in 1904. The record coolest high of 62 occurred way back in 1890. In any event, both the record low and record coolest highs were set at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 22 of the last 33 lows (67%) were in the 60s. O'Hare recorded six consecutive 60s lows from 1988 through 1993. Ten lows (30%) were in the cool 50s. One low (3%) was in the warm 70s (71 in 1998). There's a tie for O'Hare's coolest August 23rd and they were in back-to-back years. In 1964 the high was 68 (O'Hare's co-second coolest high of the date) with a low of 52. In 1965 the high was 73 with a low of 47 (O'Hare's coldest low of the date). The other co-second coolest high of 68 degrees occurred in 1961. O'Hare's coolest high of the date is 67 degrees in 1973. O'Hare's second coolest August 23rd was in 1966 as the high was 71 with a low of 51.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:40 and sunrise is at 6:10. Sunset is at 19:41 and twilight ends at 20:10. There's a total of 13 hours, 31 minutes of daylight today and 14 hours, 30 minutes between twilights. We lost three minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:41 and sunrise is at 6:11. The moon is waxing crescent, heading towards first quarter tomorrow at 8:54. Illumination was 35% at midnight, will be 41% at noon and 46% at midnight tonight. Moonrise is at 13:06 this afternoon. Moonset is at 23:00 tonight. Moonrise is at 14:13 tomorrow afternoon. Moonlight time is 9 hours, 54 minutes which is 26 minutes shorter than yesterday.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in 11 days.
