Observations taken from October 15, 1870 to October 8, 1871 were lost in the Great Chicago Fire.
According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal
high is 80 and the normal low is 60. I've calculated the 33-year
averages at 81 and 60.
On the hot side, last year, in 2011 (O'Hare's second warmest September 1st), the high was 93 with a low of 71 (*only the fourth 70s low ever at O'Hare for the date). In 2000 the high was 93 with a low of 67. Those highs of 93 degrees are O'Hare's second hottest of the date. In 1990 the high was 89 with a low of 67. O'Hare's hottest high of the date is 96 degrees in 1984. The record high of 101 degrees was set in 1953 at Midway. The
record warmest low of 78 degrees was set back in 1912, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. Another of Chicago's warm lows was 76
degrees in 1973 at Midway. 26 of the past 33 highs (79%) were in the: 70s (9) and 80s (17). O'Hare recorded nine consecutive 70s & 80s highs from 1985 through 1993. Four highs (12%) were in the hot 90s. Three highs (9%) were in the cool 60s. O'Hare's warmest September 1st was in 1960 as the high was 92 (O'Hare's third hottest high of the date)
with a low of 73 (tied with the low of 73 degrees in 1973 as O'Hare's warmest lows of the date). *O'Hare's fourth 70s low was 71 degrees two years ago in 2010.
