Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. Observations have been official at O'Hare since Thursday, January 17, 1980.
According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 56 and the normal low is 38. The 29-year averages are 58 and 39.
On the warm side, in 2004 the high was 76 with the record warmest low of 61. The record warmest low also occurred in 1900. In 1989 the high was 74 with a low of 54. In 1991 the high was 70 with a low of 55. In 1999 the high was the record high of 78 with a low of 45 (a 33 degree spread). The record high also occurred in 1901. Another warm high was 69 degrees in 1979. 19 of the 29 highs have been in the 50s (9) and 60s (10). Five highs have been in the 40s, four highs have been in the 70s and one high was in the 30s.
More recently, the large spreads were 33 degrees in 2005 (61/28), 31 degrees in 1984 (61/30) and 30 degrees in 1990 (60/30). The small spreads were four degrees in 2002 (46/42), six degrees in 1992 (48/42) and nine degrees in 2003 (48/39).
