July 31: ORD

Today is July 31st. It's the 213th day of the year. 153 days remain. It's week 31 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. ORD has been the official site of record for Chicago since Thursday, January 17, 1980. Before this, the official site of record was on the south side of Chicago at Midway International Airport (MDW), beginning on Wednesday, July 1, 1942. From Friday, January 1, 1926 through Tuesday, June 30, 1942, the official site was at the University of Chicago. Before that, the official site was at various locations in Chicago going back to Monday, October 16, 1871. Observations taken from October 15, 1870 to October 8, 1871 were lost in the Great Chicago Fire.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 83 and the normal low is 64. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 85 and 65.

On the hot side, in 2006 (O'Hare's warmest July 31st) the high was the record high of 99 with a low of 76. The record high of 99 originally occurred in 1945. In 1995 the high was 95 (O'Hare's second hottest high of the date) with a low of 74. The other warm low was 76 in 1999. O'Hare's warmest lows of the date were those lows of 76 in 1999 and 2006.
The record warmest low of 79 occurred back in 1917, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 17 of the past 33 highs (52%) were in the 80s. Nine highs (27%) were in the hot 90s. Seven highs (21%) were in the cool: 60s (1) and 70s (6). Our most recent 70s high was 74 in 2000. From 1979-2011, today is the average eighth hottest day of the year. Unlike the past few days, I can't say that the year following a hot year is a lot colder. The two references: in 2006, the high was 99. Then in 2007 the high was 91, only an eight degree drop. However, in 1995 the high was 95 and in 1996 it was only 75, a 20 degree drop. So we'll have to see what happens in future years with this.

In looking back through the years to the first July at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 19
78 the low was a cold 52 degrees. In 1971 the low was a cold 49 degrees, a temperature colder than the official record low. In 1966 the high was 82 with a cold low of 52, a 30 degree spread. In 1965 the high was a cool 70 degrees.

More recently, there w
ere large spreads of 35 degrees in 1984 (86/51) and 33 degrees in 1991 (92/59). There was an additional small spread of seven degrees in 1989 (75/68).

On the cool side, in 1990 (O'Hare's coolest July 31st) the high was 70 with a low of 52. Five years earlier, in 1985, the high was 69 (O'Hare's only 60s high and coolest high of the date) with a low of 62, a small seven degree spread. The record low of 51 was set in 1984. The record coolest high of 66 occurred back in 1912, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 18 of the last 33 lows (55%) were in the 60s. Eight lows (24%) were in the cool 50s. Seven lows (21%) were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's pre-1979 cold lows were 49 in 1971 (O'Hare's coldest low of July 31st and a low colder than the record low), 52 in 1966 and 52 in 1978.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:14 and sunrise is at 5:46. Sunset is at 20:13 and twilight ends at 20:45. There's a total of 14 hours, 27 minutes of daylight today and 15 hours, 31 minutes between twilights. We lost two minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:15 and sunrise is at 5:47. The moon is waxing gibbous, heading towards full tomorrow night at 22:27. Illumination was 95% at midnight, will be 97% at noon and 99% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 4:06 this morning. Moonrise is at 19:02 tonight. Moonset is at 5:16 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 9 hours, 4 minutes which is 22 minutes longer than yesterday.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in 34 days.

July 30: ORD

Today is July 30th. It's the 212th day of the year. 154 days remain.

I've calculated the 33-year averages at 83 and 64.

On the hot side, in 1999 (O'Hare's warmest July 30th) the high was 101 (a degree short of the record and O'Hare's hottest high of the date) with a low of 78 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date). In 2006 the high was 90 with a low of 77. (O'Hare's second warmest low of the date). In 1995 the high was 96 (O'Hare's second hottest high of the date) with a low of 70. In 1988 the high was 95 (O'Hare's third hottest high of the date). The record high of 102 and record warmest low of 84 were set on the same hot day back in 1916, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan.
We had very high dew points in 1999. The top was 83 degrees, making 1999 perhaps the most humid July 30th on record. The dew point was at or above 80 degrees for 18 hours in 1999. 30 of the past 33 highs (91%) were in the: 70s (10), 80s (12) and 90s (8). One high was in the hot 100s. Two highs were in the cool 60s. An interesting phenomenon is the drop in high temperature in the year following a minimum 95 degree high. The three examples so far: 1988 (95) followed by 1989 (75), 20 degrees cooler; 1995 (96) followed by 1996 (75), 21 degrees cooler; 1999 (101) followed by 2000 (74), 27 degrees cooler.

In looking back through the years to the first July at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable:
In 1971 the high was 72 with a low of 53, a cool day. In 1965 the high was 82 with a cold low of 50, a 32 degree spread. That low of 50 is equal to the record low.

More recently, there w
ere large spreads of 32 degrees in 1984 (82/50) and 31 degrees in 2003 (84/53). There were small spreads of five degrees in 1985 (69/64) and six degrees in 2000 (74/68).

On the cool side, in 1992 (O'Hare's coolest July 30th) the high was 65 (O'Hare's coolest high of the date) with a low of 58, a seven degree spread. In 1981 the high was 76 with a low of 53. The record low of 50 was set in 1984. The low in 1965 was also 50 degrees, making it and 1984 the coldest lows in O'Hare's history for the date. The other cool high was 69 degrees in 1985. The record coolest high of 62 occurred way back in 1895, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 27 of the last 33 lows (82%) were in the: 50s (11) and 60s (16). Six lows were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's second coolest July 30th was in 1971 as the high was 72 with a low of 53.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:13 and sunrise is at 5:45. Sunset is at 20:14 and twilight ends at 20:46. There's a total of 14 hours, 29 minutes of daylight today and 15 hours, 33 minutes between twilights. We lost two minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:14 and sunrise is at 5:46. The moon is waxing gibbous. Illumination was 89% at midnight, will be 93% at noon and 95% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 2:58 this morning. Moonrise is at 18:16 tonight. Moonset is at 4:06 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 8 hours, 42 minutes which is nine minutes longer than yesterday.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in 35 days.

July 29: ORD

Today is July 29th. It's the 211th day of the year. 155 days remain.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 84 and the normal low is 64. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 85 and 63.

On the hot side, in 1983 the high was 96 (O'Hare's co-second hottest high of the date) with a low of 72. In 2006 the high was 94 (our most recent 90s high) with a low of 74 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date). In 1988 the high was 97 (O'Hare's hottest high of the date) with a low of 70. 1983 and 2006 are O'Hare's warmest days by half a degree over 1988. In 1999 the high was 96 (O'Hare's other co-second hottest high of the date). The record high of 99 was set back in 1913. The
record warmest low of 85 occurred back in 1916. Both records were set at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. We had very high dew points in 1999. The top was 82 degrees, making 1999 perhaps the most humid July 29th on record. 18 of the past 33 highs (55%) were in the 80s. Seven highs (21%) were in the hot 90s. Eight highs (24%) were in the cool 70s. Our most recent 70s high was 79 in 2000. There is an interesting phenomenon. In the year following a high of at least 95 degrees, the high is 16 or 17 degrees cooler. The four instances so far: 1983 (96) followed by 1984 (79), 17 degrees cooler; 1988 (97) followed by 1989 (81), 16 degrees cooler; 1995 (95) followed by 1996 (78), 17 degrees cooler; 1999 (96) followed by 2000 (79), 17 degrees cooler. O'Hare's second warmest lows were 73 degrees in 1970 and two decades later in 1990.

In looking back through the years to the first July at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable:
In 1971 the low was a cold 52 degrees. In 1965 the high was 80 with a cold low of 50, a 30 degree spread. That low of 50 equals the record low. In 1962 the high was a cool 71 with a low of 54, a cool day.

More recently, there w
ere large spreads of 30 degrees in both 1979 (88/58) and 1994 (82/52).

On the cool side, in 1981 (O'Hare's co-coolest July 29th) the high was 74 with a low of 51. Three years later, in 1984, the high was 79 with the record low of 50. Another cold low was 52 in 1994. The record coolest high of 63 occurred way back in 1892, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to  Lake Michigan. 19 of the last 33 lows (58%) were in the 60s. Eight lows (24%) were in the cool 50s. Our most recent 50s low was 54 in 2003. Six lows (18%) were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's other co-coolest July 29th was in 1962 as the high was 71 (O'Hare's coolest high of the date) with a low of 54. Tied with 1984 as O'Hare's coldest low of the date is 1965's 50 degrees.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:12 and sunrise is at 5:44. Sunset is at 20:15 and twilight ends at 20:47. There's a total of 14 hours, 31 minutes of daylight today and 15 hours, 35 minutes between twilights. We lost two minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:13 and sunrise is at 5:45. The moon is waxing gibbous. Illumination was 81% at midnight, will be 85% at noon and 89% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 1:56 this morning. Moonrise is at 17:23 this afternoon. Moonset is at 2:58 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 8 hours, 33 minutes which is six minutes shorter than yesterday. Moonlight time is at its shortest today for the next several days.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in 36 days.

July 28: ORD

Today is July 28th. It's the 210th day of the year. 156 days remain. It's week 30 of the year.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 84 and the normal low is 64. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 84 and 64.

On the hot side, in 1983 (O'Hare's warmest July 28th) the high was the record high of 100 with a low of 78 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date). In 1988 the high was 98 with a low of 70.
The record warmest low of 84 occurred back in 1916, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 19 of the past 33 highs (58%) were in the 80s. Five highs (15%) were in the hot: 90s (4) and 100s (1). Nine highs (27%) were in the cool: 60s (1) and 70s (8). There was a 10 year sub-90 degree period that started in 1989 and went through 1998. Another interesting phenomenon is that the two instances of very hot highs were followed the next year by cool highs. In 1983 the high was 100, followed by a high of only 75 in 1984, 25 degrees cooler. In 1988 the high was 98 followed by a high of only 74 in 1989, 24 degrees cooler. There was such a contrast in between 1983 and 1984 that in 1983 the record high occurred followed the following year by the record low!

In looking back through the years to the first July at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1973 the high was a cool 70 degrees. In 1962 the high was a cool 67 with a low of 63, a four degree spread.

More recently, there w
ere no small spreads (diurnals of seven degrees or less) or large spreads (diurnals of 30 degrees or more).

On the cool side, in 1981 (O'Hare's coolest July 28th) the high was the record coolest high of 66 with a low of 52. This (along with 1962's high of 67) were the only 60s highs at O'Hare on July 28th. In 1984 the high was 75 with the record low of 51. 25 of the last 33 lows (76%) were in the: 50s (11) and 60s (14). There were seven consecutive 50s & 60s lows from 2003 through 2009. Eight lows (24%) were in the warm 70s.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:11 and sunrise is at 5:43. Sunset is at 20:16 and twilight ends at 20:48. There's a total of 14 hours, 33 minutes of daylight today and 15 hours, 37 minutes between twilights. We lost two minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:12 and sunrise is at 5:44. The moon is waxing gibbous, having reached first quarter two days ago at 3:56. Illumination was 71% at midnight, will be 76% at noon and 81% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 1:01 this morning. Moonrise is at 16:22 this afternoon. Moonset is at 1:56 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 8 hours, 39 minutes which is 20 minutes shorter than yesterday.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in 37 days.

July 27: ORD

Today is July 27th. It's the 209th day of the year. 157 days remain. It's week 30 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. On the hot side, in 1989 (O'Hare's warmest July 27th) the high was 93 (one of O'Hare's two hottest highs of the date) with a low of 73, O'Hare's warmest low of the date. In 1997 the high was 92 with a low of 72. The second of O'Hare's two hottest highs of the date was 93 in 1988. Note that those hottest highs were in the back-to-back years of 1988 and 1989! The record high of 100 was most recently
tied in 1955 at Midway. It was originally set back in 1916 adjacent to Lake Michigan. The record warmest low of 82 occurred back in 1916, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 19 of the past 33 highs (58%) were in the 80s. Six highs (18%) were in the hot 90s. Eight highs (24%) were in the cool: 60s (1) and 70s (7). Our most recent 70s high was 74 in 2005.

In looking back through the years to the first July at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 19
77 the low was a cold 52 degrees. This is tied with the official record low. In 1972 the high was a cool 71 degrees. In 1964 the high was 89 with a low of 59, a 30 degree spread. In 1962 the low was a cold 51 degrees, a low colder than the official record low.

More recently, there w
as a small spread of six degrees in 1981 (69/63). The large spreads were 35 degrees in 1985 (87/52), 33 degrees in 1979 (89/56) and 33 degrees in 1988 (93/60).

On the cool side, in 1984 (O'Hare's coolest July 27th) the high was 74 with a low of 55. In 2005 (just half a degree warmer than 1984) the high was 74 with a low of 56. O'Hare's only 60s high and record coolest high of the date was 69 degrees in 1981. The record low (but not O'Hare's coldest low) of 52 was set in 1985. 18 of the last 33 lows (55%) were in the 60s. Nine lows (27%) were in the cold 50s. Our most recent 50s lows were 59 in 2004 and 56 in 2005. Six lows (18%) were in the warm 70s. O'Hare's coldest low was 51 degrees in 1962, colder than the official record low. Another cold low was 52 degrees in 1977, tied with the official record low.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 5:09 and sunrise is at 5:42. Sunset is at 20:17 and twilight ends at 20:49. There's a total of 14 hours, 35 minutes of daylight today and 15 hours, 40 minutes between twilights. We lost two minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 5:11 and sunrise is at 5:43. The moon is waxing gibbous, having reached first quarter yesterday at 3:56. Illumination was 60% at midnight, will be 66% at noon and 71% at midnight tonight. Moonset was at 0:14 this morning. Moonrise is at 15:15 this afternoon. Moonset is at 1:01 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 8 hours, 59 minutes which is 57 minutes shorter than yesterday.

Summer began on June 4th and runs for 110 days through September 21st. High temperatures in this period are usually in the 70s and 80s. Highs in the 90s and 100s occur infrequently. Labor Day is in 38 days.

July 26: ORD

Today is July 26th. It's the 208th day of the year. 158 days remain. It's week 30 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 84 and the normal low is 64. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 83 and 65.

On the hot side, in 1997 (O'Hare's warmest July 26th) the high was 97 (O'Hare's most recent 90s high and hottest high of the date) with a low of 73. In 1982 the high was 91 with a low of 73.
Those lows of 73 are O'Hare's warmest lows of the date. The record high of 99 was set in 1955 at Midway. The record warmest low of 80 occurred back in 1916, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 23 of the past 33 highs (70%) were in the 80s. O'Hare recorded seven consecutive 80s highs from 2005 through 2011. Three highs (9%) were in the hot 90s. Seven highs (21%) were in the cool: 60s (1) and 70s (6). Our most recent 70s high was 74 in 2004. There have been two significant stretches of sub-90 degree highs. The first was nine years from 1988 through 1996 and the second is still ongoing, 14 years from 1998 through 2011. O'Hare's second hottest high of the date is 93 degrees in 1966.

In looking back through the years to the first July at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 19
72 the high was a cool 70 with a low of 63, a seven degree spread. In 1962 the high was 75 with a cold low of 49, a cool day.

More recently, there w
as a small spread of five degrees in 1981 (71/66).

On the cool side, in 1984 (O'Hare's coolest July 26th) the high was 67 (O'Hare's only 60s high and coolest high of the date) with a low of 55. In 1991 the high was 78 with the record low of 53. July 25: ORD

Today is July 25th. It's the 207th day of the year. 159 days remain. It's week 30 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 84 and the normal low is 64. I've calculated the 33-year averages at 84 and 65.

On the hot side, in 1987 the high was 95 with a low of 74 (O'Hare's warmest low of the date). In 1999 the high was 96 (O'Hare's hottest high of the date) with a low of 73. 1987 and 1999 were O'Hare's warmest July 25ths.
The record high of 101 was set in 1940 at the University of Chicago. The record warmest low of 77 occurred way back in 1892 at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 23 of the past 33 highs (70%) were in the 80s. O'Hare recorded six consecutive 80s highs from 1978 through 1983. Four highs (12%) were in the hot 90s. Six highs (18%) were in the cool 70s. Our most recent 70s high was 73 in 2004 (along with the high of 73 in 1959, O'Hare's coolest highs of the date).

In looking back through the years to the first July at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1970, today and tomorrow (the 25th & 26th) the temperatures were the same: a high of 89 with a low of 71.
In 1965 the high was 88 with a low of 58, a 30 degree spread.

More recently, there w
ere no large or small temperature spreads.

On the cool side, in 2004 (O'Hare's coolest July 25th) the high was 73 (along with the high of 73 in 1959, O'Hare's coolest highs of the date) with a low of 60. In 1991 the high was 77 with a low of 58. O'Hare's coldest lows were 57 degrees in 1998 and 2000. The record low of 53 was set more than a century ago in 1911. The record coolest high of 64 occurred way back in 1920. Both records were set at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 20 of the last 33 lows (61%) were in the 60s. O'Hare recorded nine consecutive 60s lows from 1978 through 1986. Four lows (12%) were in the cold 50s. Nine lows (27%) were in the warm 70s.
