February 28: ORD

Today is February 28th. It's the 59th day of the year. 306 days remain. It's week 9 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. ORD has been the official site of record for Chicago since Thursday, January 17, 1980.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 39 and the normal low is 23. I've calculated the 32-year averages at 38 and 22.

On the warm side, in 2000 the high was 55 with a low of 30. In 1983 the high was 56 with a low of 28. Another warm high 55 in 2004. Another warm low was 37 in 1987. The record high of 61 and record warmest low of 46 were both set on the same warm day way back in 1895. 28
of the last 32 highs (88%) were in the: 20s (7), 30s (10) and 40s (11). Our most recent 40s high was 40 in 2003, eight years ago. On the warmer side, four highs were in the 50s.

In looking back through the years to the first February at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1976 the high was a warm 55 with a low of 34, a warm day. February 23: ORD

Today is February 23rd. It's the 54th day of the year. 311 days remain. It's week 8 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. ORD has been the official site of record for Chicago since Thursday, January 17, 1980.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 37 and the normal low is 22. I've calculated the 32-year averages at 39 and 24.

On the warm side, in 2000 the high was the record high of 66 with the record warmest low of 51. The former record high of 60 occurred in 1977 and the former record warmest low of 43 occurred in 1961. Both former records occurred at Midway International Airport. In 1984 the high was 59 with a low of 37. In 1996 the high was 54 with a low of 37. In 1985 the high was 50 with a low of 33. Other warm highs were 51 in 1995, 50 in 1998 (our most recent 50s high) and 49 in 1983. Another warm low was 37 in 2004. 21
of the last 32 highs (66%) were in the: 30s (13) and 40s (8). On the warmer side, five highs were in the 50s and one was in the 60s. On the colder side, five highs were in the 20s.

In looking back through the years to the first February at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1978 the high was 26 with a low of 19, a seven degree spread. In 1977 the high was 58 with a low of 39, a warm day. In 1975 the high was 37 with a low of 33, a four degree spread. In 1974 the high was a cold 22 with a low of 11, a cold day. In 1971 the high was 35 with a low of 31, a four degree spread. In 1969 the high was 40 with a warm low of 35, a five degree spread. In 1968 the high was 37 with a cold low of 7, a 30 degree spread. In 1967 the high was 23 with a low of 6, a cold day. In 1966 the high was 32 with a low of 25, a seven degree spread. In 1965 the high was 22 with a low of 10, a cold day. In 1963 the high was 22 with a low of 4, another cold one! In 1962 the high was 26 with a cold low of 8, a cold day. In 1961 the high was 50 with a low of 38, a warm day.

More recently, we had a spread of five degrees in 1981 as the high was 38 with a low of 33.

On the cold side, in 1993 the high was 20 with a low of 2. In 1989 the high was 23 with a low of 4. Two years ago, in 2009, the high was 27 with a low of 9. The record low of -18 was set way back in 1873 and the record coldest high of -2 occurred way back in 1889. That high of -2 is the latest sub-zero high in Chicago's history, another suggestion that Winter is subsiding. 22 of the last 32 lows (69%) were in the: 20s (12) and 30s (10). Nine lows were in the cold: 10s (a.k.a. teens) (6) and single digits (3). One low was in the warmer 50s (the record warmest low of 51, which occurred in 2000).

February 18: ORD

Today is February 18th. It's the 49th day of the year. 316 days remain. It's week 7 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. Observations have been official at O'Hare since Thursday, January 17, 1980.
Before this, the official site was on the south side of Chicago at Midway International Airport (MDW), beginning on Wednesday, July 1, 1942. Before that, the official site was at various locations in Chicago going back to Monday, October 16, 1871. Observations taken from October 15, 1870 to October 8, 1871 were lost in the Great Chicago Fire.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 36 and the normal low is 20. I've calculated the 32-year averages at 37 and 21.

On the warm side, in 1981 the high was the record high of 62 with the record warmest low of 45. The record high of 62 was originally set in 1961 at Midway. In 1997 the high was 55 with a low of 42. Three years earlier, in 1994, the high was 57 with a low of 38. A year later, in 1995, the high was 55 with a low of 29. In 1984 the high was 47 with a low of 35. In 1992 the high was 46 with a low of 35. The other warm high was 50 in 2002. The other warm lows were 37 in 1998, 34 in 1991 and 33 in 1986. 19
of the past 32 highs (59%) were in the: 30s (10) and 40s (9). O'Hare recorded seven consecutive 30s & 40s highs from 1982 through 1988. Our most recent 40s high was 43 in 2004. On the warm side, five highs (16%) were in the: 50s (4) and 60s (1). Prior to 1979, O'Hare had highs of 60 in 1961 and 52 in 1976. On the cold side, eight highs (25%) were in the: single digits (1), 10s (a.k.a. teens) (2) and 20s (5).

The past two days have been incredible. Yesterday, February 17, was the warmest Feb. 17th of the past 33 years. Although the high of 56 fell two degrees short of 1981's 58, the low was a record-setting 47 degrees which was 8 degrees warmer than 1981's 39 degrees. That low of 47 broke the former record warmest low by five degrees! It was 42, set way back in 1890. February 16, 2011 was the second warmest Feb. 16 behind 1981. In 1981 the high was 52 with a low of 38. This year the high was 49 with a low of 37.

In looking back through the years to the first February at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1978 the high was 22 with a low of -2, a cold day. In 1976 the high was 52 with a low of 35, a warm day. In 1975 the high was 33 with a low of 31, a two degree spread. In 1974 the high was 49 with a low of 33, a warm day. In 1971 the high was 45 with a warm low of 38, a seven degree spread and warm day. In 1968 the low was a cold 7 degrees. In 1963 the high was a warm 48 degrees. In 1962 the high was 31 with a low of 26, a five degree spread. In 1961 the high was a warm 60 with a low of 29, a 31 degree spread and warm day. 1961 was the year that the record high of 62 was originally set at Midway. In 1959 the high was 21 with a low of 6, a cold day.

More recently, there were small spreads of three degrees in 1998 (40/37), four degrees in 1982 (35/31), four degrees in 2000 (32/28), six degrees in 1983 (38/32) and seven degrees in 1986 (40/33).

On the cold side, in 2006 the high was 8 with a low of -7. 2006 was O'Hare's coldest February 18th. In 1979 the high was 12 with a low of 0. In 1993 the high was 18 with a low of -3. In 2007 the high was 22 with a low of 11. The other cold lows were 7 degrees, in: 1980, 2001 and 2008. The record low of -14 and record coldest high of 0 were set on the same cold day back in 1936, at a time when the official readings were taken adjacent to Lake Michigan. 28 of the last 32 lows (88%) were in the: single digits (5), 10s (a.k.a. teens) (6), 20s (9) and 30s (8). On the cold side, two lows were in the negative single digits. O'Hare's only pre-1979 below zero low was -2 in 1978. On the warm side, two lows were in the 40s.

There was an instance of back-to-back years in which temperatures were just about as opposite as they can be. In
1993 the high was 18 with a low of -3, overall 20.5 degrees BELOW normal. Then in 1994 the high was 57 with a low of 38, overall 19.5 degrees ABOVE normal.

Today is a major day in Chicago's snow history. Back in 1908 at the U.S. Courthouse, 11.5 inches fell. In 2000, 11.1 inches fell and this accounted for 96% of the month's total of 11.6 inches.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 6:17 and sunrise is at 6:46. Sunset is at 17:29 and twilight ends at 17:58. There's a total of 10 hours, 43 minutes of daylight today and 11 hours, 41 minutes between twilights. We gained two minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 6:16 and sunrise is at 6:44. The moon is full this morning at 2:36 as the full Snow or Hunger moon. Illumination was 100% at midnight, will be 100% at noon and 99% at midnight tonight. Moonset is at 6:33 this morning. Moonrise is at 18:23 tonight. Moonset is at 7:03 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 12 hours, 10 minutes which is 46 minutes shorter than yesterday.

February 17: ORD

Today is February 17th. It's the 48th day of the year. 317 days remain. It's week 7 of the year.

Unless noted, the following data is based upon observations collected by the National Weather Service, Chicago, at O'Hare International Airport (ORD) between November 1978 and last year. Observations have been official at O'Hare since Thursday, January 17, 1980.

According to the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the normal high is 35 and the normal low is 20. I've calculated the 32-year averages at 35 and 21.

On the warm side, in 1981 the high was 58 with a low of 39. In 1994 the high was 51 with a low of 34. Four years later, in 1998, the high was 43 with a low of 39, a mere four degree spread. Other warm highs were 47 in both 1995 and three years ago (2008). There were four other warm lows: 36 degrees in 1992, 35 degrees in 1984, 33 degrees in 1983 and 32 degrees in 1982. The record high of 60 was set way back in 1880. The record warmest low of 42 was set way back in 1890. 21
of the last 32 highs (66%) were in the: 30s (13) and 40s (8). On the warmer side, two highs (6%) were in the 50s. On the colder side, nine highs (28%) were in the: 10s (a.k.a. teens) (3) and 20s (6).

In looking back through the years to the first February at O'Hare in 1959, the following instances were notable: In 1978, the high was 19 with a low of -2, a cold day. In 1976 the high was 42 with a warm low of 36, a six degree spread. In 1975 the high was 36 with a warm low of 33, a three degree spread. In 1973 the high was 21 with a low of 2, a cold day. In 1971 the high was 46 with a warm low of 36, a warm day. In 1968 the high was 22 with a low of 1, a cold day. In 1967 the low was a cold 8 degrees. In 1966 the high was 24 with a cold low of 7, a cold day. In 1962 the high was 32 with a low of 27, a five degree spread. In 1961 the high was 50 with a low of 37, a warm day.

More recently, there were small spreads of four degrees on two occasions: 1983 (37/33) and 1992 (40/36). There was a small spread of five degrees in 1982 (37/32). Spreads of six degrees occurred in: 1986 (36/30) and last year (32/26). No large spreads (30 degrees or more) have occurred.

On the cold side, in 1980 the high was 14 with a low of -5. The year prior, 1979, the high was 12 with a low of 3. In 1993 the high was 20 with a low of 0. In 2001 the high was 19 with a low of 6. Five years later, in 2006, the high was 24 with a low of 3. The record low of -11 and record coldest high of 1 were set on the same cold day back in 1903. 26 of the last 32 lows (81%) were in the: 10s (a.k.a. teens) (8), 20s (9) and 30s (9). Even colder, six lows (19%) were in the: single digits (5) and negative single digits (1).

Today is not major day in Chicago's snow history.

The following astronomical data is provided by the United States Naval Observatory. In Crystal Lake, twilight begins at 6:18 and sunrise is at 6:47. Sunset is at 17:28 and twilight ends at 17:57. There's a total of 10 hours, 41 minutes of daylight today and 11 hours, 39 minutes between twilights. We gained three minutes of daylight from yesterday. Tomorrow twilight begins at 6:17 and sunrise is at 6:46. The moon is waxing gibbous, heading towards the full Snow or Hunger moon tomorrow morning at 2:36. Illumination was 98% at midnight, will be 99% at noon and 100% at midnight tonight. Moonset is at 6:01 this morning. Moonrise is at 17:05 this afternoon. Moonset is at 6:33 tomorrow morning. Moonlight time is 12 hours, 56 minutes which is 43 minutes shorter than yesterday.
